From South Molton Town Council

REDUCTION IN PRECEPT

We are delighted to announce that residents in South Molton will find their South Molton Town Council element of their upcoming annual Council Tax bill will be lower than last year. As far as we understand, South Molton Town council is the only council is the country to have reduced their council tax bill to local residents.

This is quite a turnaround from 12 years ago when South Molton residents were paying the highest ‘parish’ element across Devon. Town Clerk Andrew Coates says, ‘Over the past decade we have been prudent but have also looked to maximise our external revenue opportunities. Even though we have achieved this saving for our residents, it hasn’t been to the detriment of those who use our facilities such as the Town Hall, the Amory Centre or indeed our invaluable market traders. The commercial rates we charge are more than competitive when compared to other providers, so we are delighted that the residents of the town can now benefit from a lower Council Tax Bill from us and our market traders and facilities hirers will continue to receive fantastic value for money’.

COUNCIL TAKES OVER FORMER TOOL HIRE PREMISES

The Council is delighted to announce that they have entered into a lease to take over the former premises of South Molton Tool Hire off Southley Road to the rear of the Pannier Market.

These premises will now be utilised for the storage of our machinery, provide a workshop for us to carry out necessary repairs as well as providing new office space for our hardworking staff. By taking on these premises it also allows us to carry out a full review of how the freed up storage space in the Pannier Market can be put to best use.

Best community Market Winners for 2nd Year Running

We are delighted  to attend an event in Birmingham on Thursday 25th January where, for the second year running – something that has never been achieved before in this competition – we won the title of the UK’s best community market.

This is a fantastic testament to the hard work put in by our staff – especially in the face of potentially increasing competition from Barnstable Pannier Market which has recently benefited from a multi-million refurbishment. We’d like to thank not only our fantastic traders, but also all of our customers who regularly use the market and took the time to vote for us.

Pannier Market Improvements

Our work to decorate the internal walls in the pannier market is now ongoing and to further enhance connectivity so that traders can take card payments, we have also upgraded our Wi-Fi at connectivity. We are awaiting quotes for the repair of the pannier market roof and will, once received, look to capture grant funding to assist with the necessary expensive repairs. We would like to reassure those using the pannier market that the building is regularly assessed in regard to health and safety.

South Molton Community Primary School.

The town council is very aware of the current situation regarding the Heckler, access to this school and the concerns that have been raised by parents. As such, we have made ongoing representations to Devon County Council through our County Councillor Jeremy Yabsley, who has assured us that the issue is being looked into.
